NDDA (National Digital Data Archive) collects, systemizes and makes searchable the descriptive data (meta-data) of internet content in the Hungarian language or related to Hungarian culture.
NDDA’s activities are based on close co-operation with partners engaged in creating digital content - the so called data providers - and the service of
the user community.
In order to provide widest possible access to on-line contents in the Hungarian language, NDDA supplies the necessary infrastructure: on the one hand it builds a database from the descriptive data of partner institutions’ electronic documents, on the other hand, it operates a freely accessible search engine for searching in this database.
The metadata
Meta-data are descriptive data of digitally available documents (image, audio material, text, motion picture). Such meta-data may be the author, title, date of creation, subject, keywords, etc. of a work.
I the case of library books, the book’s meta-data are collected on the catalogue card.
Similarly, catalogue cards of (primarily) digital content are collected, systematized and made accessible and searchable by NDDA.
The DC
DC stands for Dublin Core Metadata Initiative which is a standard specifically designed for the standardization of meta-data structure. Its purpose is acilitating a worldwide standard for meta-data creation and collection.
Standard meta-data elements are available here...
The OAI principle and the OAI PMH protocol
OAI stands for Open Archives Initiative. The point of OAI-PMH (OAI- Protocol for Meta-data Harvesting), created within the framework of this initiative, is
to provide a uniform standard for repositories sharing their meta-data. Repositories install an OAI server (a simple software) and upload their collected meta-data in accordance with the OAI standard. These OAI servers connect to the internet, thus external service providers (e.g. NDDA) can harvest always up to date meta-data.
